Not every crack means your foundation is failing — but every crack deserves a look. The pattern, location, width, and direction of a crack all tell a contractor something different about what's happening with the structure. A local contractor can assess cracks accurately and give you a straight answer about whether repair is needed and what it involves.
Types of Cracks Seen in O'Fallon Homes
Hairline cracks in drywall are common and often cosmetic. Stair-step cracks in brick or block indicate differential movement. Horizontal cracks in stem walls can signal significant lateral pressure. Wide cracks in the slab — especially ones that are also displaced vertically — point to settlement or heave. The type of crack guides the repair approach.
- Vertical or near-vertical cracks in a poured basement wall, often narrow and frequently appearing in the first year or two after construction. These are usually shrinkage as the concrete cured, and the practical question is water rather than structure — they leak long before they threaten anything.
- Diagonal cracks running from a corner of a window or door opening are stress relieving at the weakest point of the wall, and they generally indicate the footing below has moved unevenly.
- Stair-step cracks following the mortar joints in a block wall are differential movement, and reading them means watching whether the pattern is still opening rather than noting that it exists.
- Horizontal cracks partway up a basement wall are the one pattern that should not be watched and waited on. They indicate lateral pressure pushing the wall inward — from saturated soil, frost, or both — and this is a load problem rather than a settlement problem.
- A wall that is visibly bowed, leaning inward at the top, or has shifted along a horizontal crack has already moved under that pressure. Bowing is measured against a straightedge or plumb line, not judged by eye, and the measurement is what determines whether it can be stabilized in place.
Repair Methods
Depending on what's found in your O'Fallon home, repair options include epoxy injection to seal and bond cracked concrete, carbon fiber straps to stabilize bowing walls, or full foundation pier work to address the underlying movement causing the cracking. Cosmetic crack filling without addressing root causes is generally not recommended — it's a temporary patch on a structural problem.
- Injection — epoxy for structural bonding, polyurethane for sealing water out. This addresses the crack itself and is genuinely the right repair for a stable, non-structural shrinkage crack. It does nothing about a wall that is still moving.
- Carbon fiber straps stop a bowed wall from moving further. They stabilize where it currently sits; they do not straighten it back. If having the wall returned toward plumb matters, that is a different and larger scope involving excavation or wall anchors.
- Wall anchors and braces are used where there is more movement than straps are rated for, or where recovering some of the deflection over time is the goal.
- Piering addresses the footing beneath the wall when the cause is settlement rather than lateral pressure. Piering a wall that is bowing from soil pressure solves nothing, which is why the diagnosis has to come before the method.
- What none of these fix: the water. Grading, gutters, downspout discharge, and the drainage around the footing are what put the pressure on the wall in the first place, and a repair that leaves them alone is a repair with a clock on it.
